個人的に「In the end」「We were lovers」を聴けて感激でした。その中で「We were lovers」について・・・
”Fred and George”バージョンと”You and I”があるようですが・・・２月のバズとのアコステでは、”Fred and George”で歌われてますが　オリジナルはどちらか？ＪＪにとって　どう言う違いがあるのか ？
Hi Kiyo,
元はフレデリック・ショパンとジョルジュ・サンド（英語発音では「ジョージ・サンズ」）についてのラヴソングとしてFred and Georgeを書いた。この歌は使われることはなかったのだけど、巌窟王の音楽を依頼された時に、ほんの少し変えるだけで絶望的な恋愛を歌うことができるということに気づいた。You and Meという歌もあるのだけど、それはまさに今、フランス人シンガーで女優のDaniがレコーディングしているところだよ。You and Meは実際公の場で演ったこともあって、その曲はNorfolk Coastの準備をしていた時、だいたいFred and Georgeと同じ時期に書かれたものだ。

ＪＪが　２８年くらい前かな？日本の音楽雑誌でのインタビューで言ってた”Living is the best prize”という言葉・・・私は今でも心の支えになってるんですが、この言葉の背景なるものが　ＪＪにあるんですか ？
その当時の質問内容がどんなものだったかハッキリ覚えていないけれど、この言葉は自分の人生哲学にぴったり合致する。あまりに多くの人々が臆病に生きて弱ってからかなりの時間を経て死ぬ。若い時期は短く老いてからが長いんだ。ゆっくりと死んでいく、ということ。俺は活動的で、楽しいことをやりながら常に学ぶことを探して自分を高めていき、突如ポックリ！死にたい。しっかり生きている時に死にたい、半分死にかけてから死ぬのではなくて、ね。

私にとってＪＪは、レジェンド、ヒーローです。健康についても気になります・・・平均睡眠時間は　どのくらいですか ？
健康を気遣ってくれてありがとう。平均睡眠のパターンというものは持っていない。時には4時間睡眠でも大丈夫だし、8時間寝る時もある。

Jacques  Brel　の名前がインタビューに時々出てきますが、  彼の曲の中で一番好きな曲は何ですか？できれば、その  理由も教えていただけると、とてもうれしいです。  それとも、彼の生き方が好きなのでしょうか？
彼の古い映像を見ると、ステージ上での彼の演奏とカリスマ性には今でも魅了されるね、でもそれは彼の詩と感情が音楽と相まってこそのもので、年月を経た今でも自分にとって魅力がある。
 
2.
あと、今回、花見をされましたか？  されたのなら、感想を聞きたいです。
したよ。大室山の士道館道場近くで伊豆高原の桜祭にまで行った。そこではいくつかの女性グループがハワイアン風の音楽に合わせて踊っていた。新宿御苑でも花見をして、人が多いのと花の種類の多さに驚いた。伊豆高原には素晴らしく美しい桜並木があるよ。

初来日から30年が経ちましたが、日本から受ける 印象は、何か変わりましたか？（街でも人でも）
日本と日本人への愛は歳をとるにつれ大きくなっている。

4．
バズが出演する映画について何かご存じなら教えて下さい。
映画のタイトルはSucker Punch。イギリスでの不法ファイティングについてが描かれていて、若い男が悪名高いファイターとプロモータの不法な試合で復讐をしようとする。バズはイギリス北部からこの若い男と戦うために連れてこられたファイターを演じている。彼の訛りと見た目はその役にぴったり。監督は俺の友達でキックボクシングの指導者でもあり武道のジャーナリストでもある。サントラはバズと俺で書いて、ストラングラーズの曲も入っているよ。

5．
もう次の作品の構想は決まっているのでしょうか。
次のアルバムの為のアイデアは集め始めているよ。すでに完成した曲も2,3あるし、日本滞在中、道場にギターと共にたった一人で長期間過ごしたことがいくつかのアイデアを書くチャンスも与えてくれたし、そこでの環境にも刺激をうけた。

Hi Rieko,
まず初めに、長年に渡り誠実に応援してくれていることにストラングラーズ全員を代表してありがとうと言いたい。それからこんなにも長い期間SIS Japanを続けてくれ、会員の興味を維持してくれることにも感謝するよ。

ずいぶん前から気になってたんですが、UN BROKENの間奏に入る前にGetting you to sell him your soulを、２回繰り返しますが、その一回目と二回目の間に女性の声（多分）が入ってるですが、なんと言ってるんでしょうか？　私の日本語耳には「怒った？」って聞こえます。そう聞こえるだけですが。

そんな声、あるいは効果音など入ってないなんて言わないでね。毎度妙なことを質問してすみません。
リエコ、残念ながら俺が難聴か、もしくは君の幻聴だよ。

2.
ANYTHING CAN HAPPENの最後に入っている無線の音声は、何が元になっているのでしょうか。
実はこれはアメリカの戦闘機のコックピットの会話だ。ただし、これが本物か否かはわからない。

3.
今回のソロライブ、１５日のアンコール終了後、会場の数箇所から「ゴールデン・ブラウン」という声が飛んでましたが、彼らの希望はいつか叶いますか？
私個人的には、ゴールデン・ブラウンより、プリンセス・オヴ・ザ・ストリートが聴きたいです。カッシーのブルースハープが似合うと思います。
俺はまったくGBはやらないけれどバズと2人のアコースティックの時には彼が歌うよ。曲によっては歌いながら演奏することが何故かできない、というものがいくつかあるんだよ。

4.
この間伊豆で震度３の地震がありましたが、地震には慣れましたか？
地震は今まで一度しか経験したことがない。それは1980年代にARBと一緒にプレイしていた時、新宿にあるアパートの25階で寝ていた朝、その地震で目覚めた。

5．
日本には憲法９条という非戦を誓ったものがありますが、それについてどう思われますか。
これは明らかに時代遅れだし戦後アメリカによって制定されたものだ。自衛隊（つまり名前に反して実際は日本軍）がイラクなどの戦地で物流、支援の役割を担っていて、敵にしてみれば侵略軍の一部だ。もちろん日本は再び中国を侵略することはないだろうが、それでも防衛能力は維持するだろう。でもイラクは自衛戦争ではない。

6．
今回の来日で「オレって凄い」と思ったことと、逆にドジってしまったことはありますか？
（※自分のことを「凄い」と見ることはない、とのことで、質問を少し変えて答えてもらっています。印象深かったことは？という質問です。）
添野館長と練習できることは素晴らしい。ヤマブシ。花見の時期にここに居られたことは特別なことだ。桜祭りのときに焼きソバを食べながらハワイアンフラダンスを見たことはユニークだった。新宿ロフトでのライブは、特に2日目がとっても楽しかった。大室山に一人で暮らし、新曲を書き、嵐の朝3時に道場で一人練習したことは忘れられない。特に失敗したことはないけれど、新宿ロフトでの初日は緊張しすぎた。

【イタリアの奥さん】
1.
ずばり！　今年のザ・ストラングラーズのツアースケジュールはどうなってんの？６月のワイト島は売り切れだし、その後の予定はまっしろ、じゃあーりませんか。　
次のアルバムの準備してるのかしら？だったら　UK、および、ヨーロッパツアーがなくっても我慢しますけれど・・・。
今年ストラングラーズはとっても忙しくなる。全ての詳細が確認されてからしか発表しないのでまだ半分しか発表されていないけれど、夏にはヨーロッパで少なくとも10箇所の大規模フェスティバルにでる。秋には大規模な英国ツアーがあり、その後ヨーロッパの予定もある。

【GPZ】
1.
Tankを聞いて以来のファンです。ソロライブ行きました。花のお礼を言ってもらえて、びっくりしましたが、嬉しかったです。アルハンブラ宮殿の思い出等、ギター曲好きなのですが、あなたがストラングラーズやあなたの曲をアコースティック・ギターで弾き語りしてくれるなんて、まるで極上の夢を見ている気分でした。その中でいくつか質問させてください。
GPZ、優しい言葉をありがとう。（バイクの名前みたいだ！）

フランス語のWaltzin Blueが素敵でした。We Were Loversのフランス語バージョンも素敵だと思いますが、私達に聞くチャンスはありますか？
思うに、ほとんどのラヴソングはフランス語が合う。フランス語を発音するには宙にキスをするように実際に少し口を突き出すということが関係しているかな。

3.
スキンディープ、元々特に気に入っている曲ですが、アコギバージョンもとても素敵でした。今度のニューアルバムのおまけなどにする予定はないですか？
考えたことはなかったけれどいいアイデアだ。マネージメントに話してみよう。

4.
チベットの事を話題にしていましたが、英語ほとんどわからないので、今ひとことお願いします。
North Windsの初めにオレンジ色の衣が燃えている、と言った。これは元はベトナム戦争時代に仏教の僧達が自らに火をつけることに言及していた。そしてビルマとチベットでの仏僧のデモを思い出した。チベットは1958年に中国軍によって侵略されたことを忘れてはならない。

5.
ライブの前半は自分の内側を歌った曲で、後半は自分から他者へのメッセージ曲と受け取れましたが、前半になぜJelly Fishが選ばれているのですか？
Jellyfishは狭い考え方をするのではなくアイデアを吸収するということを歌っている。あの順番にちょうどフィットすると思った。

6.
女性ファンが苦笑いするような日本語の単語は誰に聞いたんですか?もしかして士道館の先生方なんて事、ないですよね？
新しい言語で最初に覚えるのはだいたい悪い、ともすれば少し無礼な言葉だということはわかるよね。でもそれが愉快だと思った。もともとは、日本語のhere, there, over there、の意味をある人に尋ねたんだ。ココ、ソコ、アソコ。もちろん、誰に教わったかは言えないよ。

JJ’S QUESTION TIME IN JAPAN, SPRING 2008

1. I was personally very pleased to hear 「In the end」「We were lovers」.  Regarding 「We were lovers」, I understand there are 2 versions ”Fred and George” and ”You and I”.  You were singing ”Fred and George” in February show with Baz but which is the original song?  What is the difference to you?
Hi Kiyo,
I wrote Fred and George, originally, as a love song about Frederique Chopin and George Sands.  The song was never used and when I was asked to write music for Gankatsuou I realised that, with very few changes, the song could be used and still talk about a doomed love. There is a song called "You and Me" which is actually being recorded right now by a French singer/actress called Dani.  I have actually played "You and Me" in public before and it was written around the same time as Fred and George when I was preparing Norfolk Coast.

2. It was maybe 28 years ago when you had an interview with a Japanese music magazine in which you said ”Living is the best prize”.  This is still my mental/emotional support.  What was the background for you to say this?
I can’t remember exactly the context for this question but it corresponds completely with my philosophy of life. Too many people live timidly and then they start deteriorating for a long while and then they die.  Young for a short while and old for a long time.  Dying slowly.  I want to keep active, having fun, always seeking to learn and improve and then die! suddenly.  I want to die when I’m alive, not half dead.

3. JJ is my legend and hero.  I am also concerned about your health…  How many hours do you sleep in average?
Thank you for being concerned about my health.  I don’t have an average sleep pattern.  Sometimes I can manage on 4 hours, other times 8 hours sleep.

1. I am so grateful that we have this opportunity to ask JJ questions.   I have always wanted to ask you this – you sometimes mention the name “Jacques Brel”.  What is your favourite music of his and why?  Or are you more attracted by the way he lived his life?
His delivery and charisma on stage are still spellbinding when I view old footage of him but it is his poetry and emotion mixed with the music that endure for me after all these years after his death.

2. Have you had a chance for “Hanami”(cherry blossom viewing)?  If you have, please tell us what you thought about it.
Yes I have. I even attended Sakura Matsuri in Izukogen near the Shidokan dojo at Mt. Ohmuroyama where I saw groups of ladies dancing to Hawaiian type songs. I saw Hanami at Shinjuku Gyoen and was amazed by the numbers of people and the beauty of the many different kinds of blossom. At Izukogen there is a Sakura Namiki which is stunning.

3. It’s been 30 years since you first visited Japan as the Stranglers.  Has your impression of Japan(towns, people, etc.) changed?
My love for Japan and its people increases the older I get.

4. Please tell us about the movie Baz is in if you know anything.
The movie is called Sucker Punch and is a about illegal fighting in England and involves a young man who is seeking revenge against a notorious fighter and promoter of illegal fights.  Baz plays the part of a fighter who is brought down from the north of England  to fight the young man. His accent and look are perfect for the part. The director is a friend of mine who is also a kickboxing instructor and martial arts journalist. The soundtrack was written by Baz and myself and includes Stranglers songs also.

5. Do you already have ideas for the next album?
I have started collecting ideas for the next album. There are already a few songs completed and my stay in Japan with my guitar, all alone at the dojo for long periods of time, has given me the chance to write some ideas down and be inspired by my surroundings.

Hi Rieko,
First of all I would like to thank you on behalf of all the Stranglers for great loyalty over many years and thanks for keeping SIS Japan going for so long and maintaining interest with the members.

1. Regarding Suite XVI.  Between repeating the line “Getting you to sell him your soul” twice in Unbroken, I hear female(maybe) voice.  What does it say?  To me, it sounds like “okotta?(angry? In Japanese)”.
Sorry Rieko, either I am deaf or you are hearing voices.

2. What is the source of the radio transmission at the end of ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN?
This is actually taken from an American fighter pilot cockpit conversation. However I do not know if it is genuine or just genuine sounding.

3. After the encore of your acoustic show on 15th March at Shinjuku Loft, there were some voices for “Golden Brown”.  Will they be able to hear you sing it someday?  Personally, I would love to hear your “Princess of the Street”.  I think Kasshi’s blues harp will sound good with it.
I never play Golden Brown, however, Baz does it when we play acoustic duos. There are some songs I just cannot sing AND play.

4. There was an earthquake of intensity 3 on the Japanese scale in Izu the other day.  Are you already used to the earthquake?
I have only experienced an earthquake once. That was when I was woken in the morning when I was sleeping in an apartment on the 25th floor in Shinjuku while I was playing with ARB in the 1980s.

5. In Japanese constitution, there is an Article 9 which pledge no-war.  What do you think of this?
This is clearly out of date and was dictated by the Americans after the war. However, the Jieitai( which despite its name is effectively the Japanese army) is active in war zones such as Iraq in a logistical and support role and as far as the enemy is concerned is part of the  invading army. Of course, Japan will not go invading China again but will still maintain a defensive capability although Iraq is not a self defence war.

6. Can you tell me some great things you’ve done during your latest stay in Japan which you were particularly impressed?  Also on the other hand, is there anything that you think you made a big mess?
Training with Kancho Soeno has been great.  Yamabushi.  Being here for Hanami was extraordinary. Seeing the Hawaiian hula dances during Sakura Matsuri whilst eating yakisoba was unique.  Playing Shinjuku loft was great fun, especially the second night. Living alone at Mt. Ohmuroyama, writing new songs and training in the dojo alone during a huge storm at 3am, unforgettable.  No real big mess but I was far too nervous on my first night at Shinjuku Loft.

1. What is the Stranglers’ tour schedule for this year?  If you are working on the next album, I can understand if there’s no UK/Europe dates though.
The Stranglers are going to get very busy this year. We should be doing at least 10 big festivals in Europe this summer although only half have been announced since we only confirm when all the details are in place. In the autumn we will be doing a large British tour followed by some European dates also.

JJ, thank you for the shows.  If I may be very honest, I would like to follow you around!
I have been a fan since I first heard “Tank”.  I was at your second show this time.  I was very surprised to hear you mention the flowers I sent to you and was very pleased.  I like guitar number like “memory of Alhambra palace” so it was just like a superb dream to hear you play the acoustic guitar and sing the Stranglers/your songs.
Thank you GPZ for your kind words (sounds like a motorcycle model!)

1. Waltzinblue in French was fantastic.  I think “We Were Lovers” in French would also be wonderful– would we be able to hear it someday?
I think most love songs sound good in French. Part of it, I think, has something to do with the fact that to make sounds in French you have to pout a little as if you are kissing the air.

2. I like “Skin Deep” and the acoustic version was superb.  Do you have any plan on including it in the next album as a bonus track?
No I hadn’t thought of that but it’s a good idea. I shall mention it to management.

3. You mentioned about Tibet during the show but I’m afraid I could not understand it in English.  Can you please once again say a word on the Tibet?
At the beginning of North Winds blowing I mention Orange Robes Burning. Originally this was a reference to images of Buddhist priests setting fire to themselves during the Vietnam war. Then I remembered the Buddhist priests protesting in Burma and then Tibet.  We must not forget that Tibet was invaded by the Chinese army in 1958.

4. I thought the first half of the show consisted from songs about inner aspect of yourself and the latter half was more about messages to others.  Why did you select Jelly Fish in the first half of the show?
Jellyfish is about absorbing ideas and not being small minded. I thought that it fitted where I placed it.

5. Who told you those Japanese words which made female fans grin.  I doubt if it’s sensei from Shidokan?
Well, you know, that usually the first words that you learn in a new language are always slightly cheeky or even slightly rude.  But I thought it was fun. Originally it came from me asking someone the meaning of here, there and over there in Japanese.  Koko, soko, asoko.  Of course, I can’t say who told me.
